Silica sol is a colloidal solution, odorless and non-toxic, its molecular formula can be expressed as mSiO2.H2O, and its appearance is a milky white translucent liquid.
The internal structure of silica sol particles is siloxane bonds (-Si-O-Si-), and the surface layer is covered by many siloxyl groups (-SiOH) and hydroxyl groups (-OH), which are the same as the alkali existing in the colloidal solution. Metal ions together form a diffuse electric double layer, and the electrostatic interaction between particles plays an important role in the stability of the colloidal solution.
